Komisi Pemilihan Umum (KPU) mendapat tekanan untuk bertindak tegas terkait penyelenggaraan debat resmi pemilu tahun 2024. Saat ini, yang tampak adalah ketidakjelasan format dan rendahnya kepercayaan terhadap persepsi netralitas KPU.

Sekitar tujuh puluh hari sebelum salah satu hari pemilihan umum terbesar di dunia dihelat di Indonesia, para pemilih sangat antusias untuk mengikuti lima ajang debat yang dijadwalkan disiarkan di televisi. Ajang adu gagasan ini dinilai berperan menentukan pendapat masyarakat tentang sosok yang akan dipilih tahun depan.

Debat pertama akan diadakan Selasa 12 Desember. Acara itu akan menampilkan ketiga kandidat yang akan saling presentasi dan adu pendapat soal program kampanye masing-masing di TV nasional.

Namun, di kalangan kandidat pemilu dan pengawas pemilu, muncul kekhawatiran setelah Ketua KPU Hasyim Asy’ari mengumumkan perubahan mendadak pada format debat. Perubahan tersebut berpotensi melanggar peraturan yang ada.

Pekan lalu, Ketua KPU Hasyim mengeluarkan pengumuman yang menyiratkan bahwa akan terjadi lima debat yang menampilkan calon presiden dan wakil presiden secara bersamaan. Padahal, seharusnya yang diselenggarakan adalah tiga debat presiden dan dua debat wakil presiden, sebagaimana diamanatkan dalam undang-undang.

Meskipun undang-undang tidak merinci teknis penyelenggaraan debat, sudah menjadi kebiasaan bahwa calon presiden dan wakil presiden pada suatu saat akan diberi kesempatan terpisah untuk adu gagasan dengan lawannya. Ajang semacam itu akan menciptakan persaingan yang setara.

Pada 2019, misalnya, dilaksanakan dua kali debat calon presiden. Lalu dilanjutkan dengan satu debat yang menampilkan calon wakil presiden. Ajang ditutup dengan dua debat calon presiden yang hadir didampingi calon wakil presiden.
