Indonesia Decides

Fresh off the New Year holiday, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo kicked off a working visit on Tuesday to three regencies in southern Central Java considered strongholds of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo.

President Jokowi left his hometown of Surakarta on Tuesday morning for a stop in Purworejo, Central Java, to inaugurate a new bus terminal in the regency's capital, along with three other bus terminals, one in the nearby regency of Wonosobo, and the other two in Madiun and Blitar, two cities in East Java.

After the event in Purworejo, President Jokowi continued his trip to Cilacap, where he conducted an on-site inspection of an integrated waste disposal site.

Also in Cilacap, he conducted a spot check on the State Logistics Agency’s (Bulog) rice distribution efforts.

Next on Jokowi's agenda was a visit to Banyumas, where he met with farmers from throughout Central Java at a local sports complex.

Jokowi's trip to the southern part of Central Java, the bread basket of the province, came days after Ganjar toured the area for his presidential campaign.

On Dec. 26, Ganjar met with local batik craftsmen and young voters in Sukoharjo regency.

The former Central Java governor also visited Klaten city the following day and Wonosobo regency on Friday, where he offered a number of education-related campaign promises.

On Friday, Ganjar visited Surakarta to meet with a local cleric. It was his second stop in the city on the campaign trail, after he attended a PDI-P rally there on Dec. 24, in the fourth week of the campaign season.

Surakarta is widely seen as a stronghold of the First Family. It was where President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo started his political career with the PDI-P some 18 years ago when he won the mayoral election in the city. Jokowi’s eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who is running for VP alongside presidential frontrunner Prabowo Subianto, is currently the city’s mayor.
