T

he Central Java provincial administration will examine some 3,000 older, informally operated oil wells following the fatal blast in Blora regency that killed five people collecting crude oil.

Central Java Energy and Mineral Resources Agency head Agus Sugiharto said the validation team would register and decide which of the oil wells, referred to as “people’s wells”, were fit to operate.

The process will be conducted in cooperation with the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas), state-owned oil and gas producer PT Pertamina and the Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda).

“From initial registration, there are 5,597 old wells under discussion, with Blora regency having the largest number with 3,136 wells,” he said in Semarang on Wednesday, as quoted by Kompas.com.

“Those wells must be examined because their safety [levels] endanger the public.”

Agus was speaking on the sidelines of a session publicizing Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Regulation No. 14/2025 on the management of people’s oil wells.
