A

blistering crosscourt backhand return sealed victory for Janice Tjen, wrapping up her two-hour Chennai Open final against Kimberly Birrell 6-4, 6-3 as the Australian’s reply caught the net. With that final unforced error, the 23-year-old Indonesian captured her maiden WTA Tour title, a fitting finish to a breakout season that has propelled her onto the global tennis stage.

Janice's victory at the Chennai’s SDAT Stadium meant she is the first Indonesian to capture a WTA Tour singles title since Angelique Widjaja won the 2002 Pattaya Open.

Seeded fourth, Janice powered past 20-year-old Czech prodigy Linda Fruhvirtova, a former world No. 49 and inaugural champion when the Chennai Open joined the WTA Tour in 2022. In the semifinals, she continued her impressive run by defeating Thailand’s rising star Lanlana Tararudee.

Janice nearly claimed her first WTA Tour crown back in September, when she reached the final of the São Paulo Open in Brazil, but fell short against 19-year-old French rising star Tiantsoa Sarah Rakotomanga Rajaonah.

Undeterred, she bounced back in style, capturing the Jinan Open title on the lower level ITF Challenger Tour.

Following her victory in Chennai, Janice surged 29 spots up the WTA rankings, climbing from 82 to 53, a timely boost as she gears up for the Australian Open in January.

Several hours after her singles triumph, Janice doubled down on success by capturing the doubles crown alongside compatriot Aldila Sutjiadi. The second-seeded Indonesian duo toppled top seeds Storm Hunter of Australia and Monica Niculescu 7-5, 6-4 in the final.
