Have you ever thought that maybe it would be nice if you could actually make music while enjoying your meal of fast-food?

Now McDonald’s Netherlands has brought that idea to life through McTrax, a full music production tool in the shape of a placemat. You can connect your phone to the touch-sensitive paper placemat, which uses conductive ink, via Bluetooth connection and create your own music with your meal.

As reported by Daily Dot, this innovation was made through a collaboration between two Dutch media agencies, TBWA/NEBOKO and This Page Amsterdam. Using power supplied by the smartphone, the mat will lead you into a new music-making experience through a set of beat types, synthesizer, audio recorder and Kaoss Padd effects provided by TBWA/NEBOKO. The innovation is also made possible by an open-music audio platform named AudioKit, which created the technology to organize and simplify the usage of a complex audio production code.

Koert Gaaikema, technical team lead of This Page Amsterdam, revealed that he had approached the AudioKit developers with questions regarding the making of the mat through the platform’s forum, without ever disclosing who their client was prior to the release of McTrax.
