survey completed by global wedding marketplace Bridestory in December 2016 stated that 14.5 percent of Indonesian couples found their wedding professionals for their special occasion at exhibitions.

As themed, well-organized wedding events are now a trend, the online service for the second time, held the Bridestory Fair, where would-be brides and grooms can directly meet with over 100 wedding professionals from Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines.

The venue at the grand ballroom of the Sheraton Grand Hotel at Gandaria City, South Jakarta, was turned into a garden to match this year’s theme of “Green Botanical”— predicted to be this year’s trend.

“We expect this theme can bring something new to the wedding business in the country as well as inspiration to clients. We applied botanical elements as the venue’s decorative theme to present the new trend of wedding events, which is fresher, effortless, clean and modern,” said Bridestory Fair 2017 lead coordinator Nathalia Isadora. The event was held from Feb. 10 to 12.

In just a stroll of the “garden,” visitors could have all the items of their wedding’s to-do list checked off.

The exhibitors offered just the thing a bride and a groom would need for their wedding day, a total of 16 categories that included gowns and suits, venue, decorations, cakes and caterers, hair and make-up, invitation cards and souvenirs.

Among the exhibitors were Suryanto Decoration, Dalang Indonesia, designer labels Hian Tjen, Yogie Pratama and VeraKebaya, Wong Hang Distinguished Tailor, Lumens Indonesia, jewelry maker Frank & co. as well as Davy Linggar Photography.

Designer Didiet Maulana with his label IKAT Indonesia, which specializes in traditional woven fabric, brought his new line SVARNA that offered a unique experience for those intending to adorn a traditional wedding costume on their special day.

In the SVARNA line, Didiet created customized wedding attire, as well as jewelry, which embraces the unique characteristics of each bridegroom.

“It will take time, of course, because we will hold research on the wedding attire the bride and the groom wish to wear before creating the designs that will match their personalities,” he said.

“Not only do we preserve traditional cultures, we also empower local artisans in the region where the ethnic wedding attire comes from.”

A wedding kebaya (traditional blouse) for a Batak Mandailing-themed wedding on display at SVARNA’s booth, for instance, boasted intricate design and elegant color combination.

“It’s encouraging that more and more couples in big cities are interested in wearing traditional wedding attire these days,” said Didiet who would fly to Kalimantan to hold field and literary research on the region’s wedding costumes.

Another exhibitor, Alleka Design, specialized in creating immaculately decorated events that combined technology and art.

“Our in-house designers and architects are ready to realize even your wildest imaginations,” said company director Alice Callista, while demonstrating a digital background displayed on three-panel windows that slowly transformed from an image of a brick wall into an outdoor viewing scene.

Bridestory also being held hand-in-hand with SweetEscape Honeymoon Travel Fair 2017 that offered varied choices of destination and honeymoon trip packages to complete the feast.

“While couples are busy with wedding preparations, they overlook honeymoon planning. Only one out of four couples because of various reasons go [on honeymoons]. They have limited time or a limited budget, but at the fair they could find interesting trip packages,” said SweetEscape founder and CEO David Soong.

Bridestory CEO Kevin Mintaraga said the event was held as a result of high demand from the public to get the best wedding professionals with attractive prices into one place.

“I hope we can inspire and help would-be bridegrooms to plan their special day with the varied trends and vendors we offered,” he said.
