The Chinese New Year is now over, but it is never too late to host a Peranakan-themed wedding.
Combining Chinese and local cultures, a Peranakan wedding is always interesting to see. Jakarta-based wedding planner and Amaya wedding founder, Syita Sophiaan, told The Jakarta Post that for the last two years the demand for such weddings, also known as chinoiserie, had increased.
Here are five tips to hold a Peranakan-themed wedding.
Understand the culture
Newlywed Pamela Teh Charlynn recently held a Peranakan-themed wedding. Based on her experience, it is important to understand certain traditions, especially the tea serving ceremony. The ceremony is considered important for people of Chinese descent as it shows the bride and groom's respect for their families. Prior to the occasion, it is crucial to brief the families on the ceremony's dos and don'ts.

Pick the right color
There are three color themes in a Peranakan wedding: red, white-and-blue and pastel. While red is inspired by the Chinese lanterns, the other two colors are derived from classic Chinese porcelains. However, they could be combined with other cultures.
"I chose the white-and-blue porcelain pattern for the decoration combined with traditional Bugis wedding attire for my wedding," shared Syita.
Moreover, Syita suggested that the chosen color is applied in each element of the wedding, from the invitation, souvenir, decoration and more.
Be creative with batik pesisir pattern
Those coming from Javanese or Sundanese families are suggested to consider batik pesisir (coastal batik) patterns for the wedding. The batik pattern showcases the acculturation of Chinese and local cultures. This allows the bride and groom to wear traditional Javanese or Sundanese attire without looking out of place.
Enhance the theme with flowers
Syita mentioned that flowers may help set the wedding’s ambiance. Those who prefer traditional ambiance are recommended to choose local flowers, such as a combination of jasmine and pandanus leaves or bunga jengger ayam (amaranth flowers).
On the flip side, imported flowers, including lilies, Casa Blancas, tulips and roses, add a modern touch to the wedding.

Include Peranakan dishes
Pamela suggested to include Peranakan meals on the menu, including wedang ronde (glutinous rice flour served with a hot ginger drink), fried noodles and cap cai (stir-mixed vegetables). Presenting Peranakan dishes can help guests experience the Peranakan tradition much better. (kes)
