'Injustice 2': a fun fighting game

Injustice 2 is a successful follow up to its 2013 predecessor, Injustice: Gods Among Us, and cements itself as one of the most fun fighting games in recent times.

A

simple but efficient premise of a fighting game featuring DC superheroes seemed risky at first, but it manages to work for the Injustice series.

With a very strong single-player campaign that uses a Role-Playing Game (RPG) customization approach, Injustice 2 is a rich game that provides plenty of goodies for players.

While the first Injustice was a great basic fighting game that appealed to all levels of gamers, this sequel provides additional features in a variety of ways.

The first significant additional feature is, of course, the growing roster.

Other than the popular superheroes and supervillains, such as Superman, Batman, the Joker and Wonder Woman, the game also features lesser-known DC characters, including Gorilla Grodd, Captain Cold, Cheetah and Doctor Fate.

The graphics are visually stunning, making each character distinctively pop out. The backgrounds are also presented in high detail, which plays a lot into the overall playing experience.

The characters’ distinctiveness also extends to their respective fighting styles, as anyone with a mild interest in the superhero fandom would know.

The basic combat system is simple and relatively very easy to master. Players who are already familiar with the game’s developer, NetherRealm, should have little trouble getting around the controls.

Another additional feature are the explosive and enjoyable cut scenes between fights.

The single-player campaign feature is really what makes Injustice 2 stand out from other great fighting games. It manages to avoid feeling compulsory and delivers actual motivation for users to play the game.

The narrative is delivered with actual intrigue — rather ironic considering how poorly the cinematic counterpart of DC comics has been received.

As in the previous Injustice, Superman is a villain here, but he broods in a far more narratively convincing way than his overdramatic cinematic Man of Steel counterpart.

The game’s Gear System separates Injustice 2 from its predecessor with an RPG mindset, giving players points with every win. Players can use the points to upgrade their characters in a variety of ways — their strength, ability or health. This results in a strong variety between each individual player, depending on what aspects of their chosen character they want to focus on.

The customizable approach extends to the characters’ costumes, which also lends a sense of personality to the game.

Each character has unique special abilities, and they are very colorful and fun. For example, Harley Quinn has the ability to throw meat from her collection of hyenas, Green Arrow has an endless supply of arrows and Wonder Woman has the Hippolyta’s Light power attack.

Online play also works well, with only minor lagging issues.

In conclusion, Injustice 2 is a fun fighting game that stands with the best in its genre. Whether you are a superhero comic buff or not, as long as you are a fan of gaming, Injustice 2 is a title not to be missed.
