ndonesia has called on ASEAN to assume “moral leadership” in navigating the Indo-Pacific’s growing geopolitical and economic uncertainty, urging the bloc to uphold its founding principles of neutrality, dialogue and just cooperation in the face of mounting global tensions.
Speaking on the final day of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, Indonesia stressed that ASEAN must remain committed to a rules-based order that emphasizes inclusivity and justice.
The appeal comes amid a spike in global instability, from Washington’s trade tariff policy and ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East to the unrelenting Myanmar crisis.
Key ASEAN dialogues concluded on Friday with the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and the East Asia Summit (EAS), where Southeast Asian foreign ministers met with representatives from major global powers including the United States, China and the European Union.
At the EAS, Foreign Minister Sugiono called on ASEAN partners, including Australia, Japan and India, to “speak up in the name of humanity and global justice” amid what he described as “increased policy uncertainty and trade tensions”.
“We should not perceive the Indo-Pacific merely through a narrow political-security lens, but as a sea of opportunity for inclusive and sustainable economic cooperation,” Sugiono said.
