red panda at Taman Safari Indonesia in Cisarua, West Java, has given birth to a cub, Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar tweeted on Friday.

"Thank God. Just received the news, just now a red panda at the Panda Palace TSI Taman Safari Indonesia Cisarua gave birth, this is a first for Indonesia. Look, it's really cute," Siti posted on Twitter along with a picture of the cub.

In a statement on Friday, Taman Safari Indonesia Bogor director Jansen Manansang said the red panda baby was born on Thursday at 6:30 a.m. of 8-year-old female panda Xing Xing and 9-year-old male panda Bai Bai.

The red panda is also known as a firefox due to its fox-like features and thick red fur that resembles flames, according to kontan.co.id. It is listed as an endangered species.

The red panda is much smaller than the black and white giant panda. It weighs around 10 to 15 kilograms, in comparison to the giant panda, which weighs between 70kg and over 100kg.

Although smaller in size, the red pandas' appearance and behavior are no less cute and adorable than the giant panda.

In 2017, Taman Safari welcomed four red pandas named Shing Shing, Mey Mey, Pai Pai and Hao Hao from China. Along with two giant panda bears named Hu Chun and Cai Tao, the special guests and any cubs born in Indonesia will return to the East Asian giant after 10 years. (liz/mut)
