The Batu Secret Zoo in Batu city, East Java is involved in international breeding programs for tapirs and giraffes with a Japanese zoo association.
he Batu Secret Zoo recently held an International Breeding Program for Red Pandas event in Batu city, Malang, to welcome the arrivalsof two red pandas and three giraffes from Japan.
Japanese Consul General in Surabaya Takeyama Kenichi attended the event.
In his speech, Takeyama thanked the Batu Secret Zoo for participating in an animal exchange with the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums (JAZA), which is known to have a high standard in animal breeding and conservation programs.
“I hope cooperation between zoos in both countries can be increased in the future, especially in animal conservation,” Takeyama said in press release issued by Batu Secret Zoo operator PT Bunga Wangsa Sedjati, as quoted by the Japanese Embassy on Monday.
Meanwhile, Batu Secret Zoo curator Mariusz Lech said he hoped the zoo could receive more animals in the future through the international breeding program scheme as an effort to keep protected animals from extinction.
PT Bunga Wangsa Sedjati received a red panda named Kaito on July 30 from Nishiyama Zoo in Sabai City, Fukui prefecture, and another named Fujimaru on Oct. 2 from Tama Zoological Garden in Tokyo.
Kaito is a male red panda born on June 27, 2022, at Nishiyama Zoo, and Fujimaru is a male red panda born on July 27, 2022, at the Tama Zoological Garden.
