A

round 90 percent of startups end in failure as a result of a difficulty to recruit suitable and competent CEOs to run the business, according to a survey by CBN Insight in 2018. To help tackle this issue, the Master in Management study program at Gadjah Mada University's School of Economics and Business (FEB UGM) is cooperating with Kagama Entrepreneur Forum to hold a talent competition for CEO and Board candidates for startup companies.

Launched on March 16, the CEO and Board Challenge 2.0 invites UGM's Master in Management students and alumni to compete in teams of three or more. The selected participants will have the opportunity to lead one of 10 startups for three months to one year.

Among the 10 startups involved in the project are Q//R Pay, Micro Finance, Pregnancy Guide, BUME, Ruang Halal, Idesainer, FirstJob.id, Layanan Pos, Sekolah Kita and Telpon.

"We are seeking to create and develop business leader candidates who possess innovation and creativity spirit," said the program study head of FEB UGM's Master in Management, Hani Handoko, who attended the launch event, according to ugm.ac.id.

The program also aims to boost the birth of startups that can be successful that can significantly benefit the national economy, he added. "So they can contribute to the country."

FEB UGM dean Eko Suwardi said the participants would be required to deliver their business plan concept and join a three-day CEO bootcamp prior to being selected. 

"The participants will be mentored by alumni who are former CEOs to ensure they will be able to perform well during their time leading the startup," said Eko. (kes)
