Makoto Shinkai returns with Weathering with You, a fun anime to watch despite the gloomy message it tries to send.
To expect the latest offering from Makoto Shinkai to be a follow-up to his 2016 movie Your Name will lead to great disappointment.
It is true that both anime films share Shinkai’s signature of blending the three Japanese belief systems with problems of modern times, science fiction, fantasy and romance, but the similarities stop there, if the cameo appearance of characters from previous films doesn’t count.
Unlike Your Name, which had our emotions all over the place with its story about a teen couple separated by space and time, Weathering with You sends a more realistic message on how people, or at least the Japanese, deal with climate change.
As the title suggests, the film is built around climatic changes in Tokyo, where not a single day goes by without rain, even in summer.
It is around this time that 16-year-old Hodaka Morishima (voiced by Kotaro Daigo) leaves his home on a remote island with injuries to his face and body for Tokyo, just to struggle for survival on the streets of the capital.
In the seedy underbelly of Tokyo, he meets Hina Amano (Nana Mori), a part-time fast-food restaurant worker who lives alone with her kid brother Takai (Yuki Kaji).
