T Gikoko Kogyo Indonesia, a renewable energy power plant engineering company, is utilizing innovative carbon finance to invest in landfill gas flaring systems to improve waste management in cities in Indonesia.

PT Gikoko Kogyo Indonesia said that under the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), projects that deliver measurable environmentally positive impacts receive monetary incentives if approved by the United Nations Framework for Climate Change.

"The organic fraction of municipal solid waste degrades to become harmful methane with global warming potential and Gikoko flares prevent its addition to the atmosphere," he said, adding, "Gikoko seals the mountains of rubbish exposed to disease carriers to reduce the health risks."

Gikoko said that it had entered into Public Private Partnerships with several cities, including Pontianak, Palembang, Bekasi and Makassar, with the credits sold to the World Bank acting as trustee for the Netherlands' CDM fund.

Another benefit of the CDM project is that poor people can make a meager living from picking out sellable plastics and metals. "Gikoko is leveraging its thermal engineering and industrial safety know-how to provide sanitized water and cooking heat to be recovered from the flares," it said.

Thanks to the world leader's concern for the environment, CDM enables Gikoko to make the investment, turning waste into a cash stream. "Gikoko commits part of the revenue to help the poor," it added. -- JP
