Leona Lewis' debut album, Spirit, is mellow and groovy piano pop
Leona Lewis' debut album, Spirit, is mellow and groovy piano pop. In 2006, the British songstress won the popular reality television talent competition, the X factor.
Spirit was released in November 2007 and became one of the fastest selling debut albums ever in both the United Kingdom and Ireland. The album itself was released worldwide early this year.
Her lyrics are emotional, poignant and melancholic. This is juxtaposed by the groovy drumming under her melodic vocals, creating a pleasant contrast.
With the simple instrumentation of piano, keyboard, drums and a string section on some tracks, Leona and her producers have been quite successful in creating an ambient, full and bittersweet sound throughout the album.
In addition, she has a wide vocal range and alternates between energetic, diva-like melodies and soft falsetto. The only shortcoming is the repetition of musical themes in some tracks.
Her first single from the album, Bleeding Love, is a well-composed tune that is sweetly melodic and catchy. Other tracks worth checking out are Whatever it Takes, Better in Time and I'm You.
This is a good album for the broken-hearted.
