UI shows its class at Jessup competition

The University of Indonesia (UI) has once again showed its class at the international level when its students won awards and other acclaim in the Phillip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition, a speech contest.

During this year's competition, held from April 6-12 in the United States capital of Washington DC, UI student Rivana Mezaya (Meza) won the Third Best Oralist award. The first and second place awards were given to students from University College London in the United Kingdom.

Meza's teammates Edwina Kharisma and Fitria Chairani placed 31st and 53rd in the rankings of the 100 Best Oralists at the contest, the largest moot court competition in the world.

"I am very happy. I appreciate my team members, I appreciate the assistance from my seniors during the preparation for this prestigious competition," Meza said when The Jakarta Post recently spoke to her about the team's achievements.

The UI team also placed among the 16 best speech teams at the 2008 Jessup competition, while their paper was credited as the 19th Best Memorial.

Hanna Azkiya, the coach of the UI team, said that it took them about six months to prepare for the international speech contest, including the memorial paper, its revisions and for speech training.

"We focused on how to sharpen our questions and arguments. We have to make our arguments as directly as possible," said Hanna, who won 1st Best Oralist at last year's Jessup competition.

According to Hanna, members of the competing speech team had to challenge themselves and build their self-confidence during the six-month preparation period.members of the team have shown dedication and commitment. I am happy that we won awards," she added.

Meza said that, aside from winning the speech award, her participation in the Jessup competition gave her a chance to tour cities in the United States.

"We'd like to thank officials at the Indonesian Embassy who took us to see the cherry blossom festival (in Washington DC)," she added.
