City sees more demand for goats

JAKARTA: The demand for goats and cows ahead of Islamic Sacrifice Day, Idul Adha, has increased by 10 percent compared to last year, an official said Saturday.

Edy Setyarto from the city's husbandry agency said it predicted the demand would reach 50,000 for goats and 12,000 for cows.

The animals will enter the capital from other areas such as East Java, Central Java and Lampung. Edy said most of the animals had already been selected. A few might suffer from minor illnesses like sore eyes and runny nose, usually inflicted by the long journey, he added.

To ascertain the animals' health condition, the agency, in cooperation with Bogor Agriculture Institute, will monitor the animals.

"Welcoming Idul Adha on Dec. 8, we will check every coming animal," Edy was quoted as saying by beritajakarta.com on Sunday.

The animals will be kept at certified pens throughout the city.

Edy said Jakartans who would like to buy sacrificial animals should check all the documents thoroughly to avoid contracting diseases. He said people should also buy animals from certified pens. -JP
