ANADO: Travelers from Malaysia and Taiwan have dominated the North Sulawesi tourism market this year, Sulawesi tourism officials say.

Throughout January, more than 320 Malaysians and almost a similar number of Taiwanese visited the region, North Sulawesi Culture and Tourism Agency head Boy Rompas said Monday.

"Based on records from Manado's Sam Raulangi Airport, a total of 1,690 foreign visitors arrived in North Sulawesi that month," Rompas said to Antara news.

Those figures indicate there was a 117.6 percent increase in the number of foreign visitors to the area this year compared to the same period last year, he added.
