JAKARTA: Residents may be imprisoned if they don't let the city administration fumigate their districts with mosquito-repelling gases, a common practice to pre-vent dengue fever outbreaks, an official says.
"We have a law for that. Residents who oppose fumigation are certainly a danger to their neighborhoods," said City Secretary Muhayat in Jakarta, Friday, citing a 1984 law on contagious diseases which carries a minimum penalty of one year in prison or Rp 1 million (US$93).
Jakarta officials have been complaining about the difficulties fumigating upmarket housing areas. Central Jakarta mayor, Sylviana Murni, recently said she regretted how difficult it was to fumigate Menteng.
"If I have to, I'll issue a mayoral decree so our field operatives can do their jobs," Sylviana said Thursday.
Menteng Subdistrict Chief Suhardi Masdar said there were 149 cases of dengue fever in 2008 and a further 38 cases of dengue fever in 2009, as of Wednesday. - JP
