ndonesia strongly condemned Israel’s plan for a military takeover of Gaza City proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling the proposal a “grave violation” of international law that undermines peace efforts in the Middle East and deepens the humanitarian crisis in the enclave.
Early on Friday, the Israel security cabinet approved plans for a major military operation to seize Gaza City, as reported by AFP. In a post on social media late on Friday, the prime minister said Israel was “going to occupy Gaza; we are going to free Gaza from Hamas”.
In the same meeting, it also adopted a set of principles for concluding the war in Gaza, including demilitarizing the territory and establishing a new administration that is “neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority (PA)”.
The decision immediately triggered a wave of criticism from across the globe, including from the Foreign Ministry, which issued a statement on its official X account late on Friday, that Indonesia denounced “Israel’s unilateral decision to take over Gaza”.
The ministry cited International Court of Justice (ICJ) rulings saying Israel did not have sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territory.
“Any actions taken by Israel cannot change the legal status of the Palestinian territory,” the Foreign Ministry wrote in the statement.
It also urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the wider international community to “take concrete steps” to halt “Israel’s illegal actions”.
