Shopping malls advised to place safety nets

A

man was killed after falling from the 11th-floor of Mangga Dua Square mall in West Jakarta, on Friday, raising concerns over safety measures at malls following a recent spike in mall suicides.

The 35-year-old victim is the third this week after two separate suicides on Monday at Grand Indonesia mall in Central Jakarta and Senayan City in South Jakarta.

Jakarta Building Supervision Agency (P2B) said earlier that it would require malls to install safety nets in-between floors to prevent similar cases in the future.

"Installing safety nets is among the additional rules *imposed on malls and high-rises*," the agency's head of complaints and sanction division, Syarifuddin was quoted as saying by vivanews.com.

Central Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Hamidin also advised malls to improve their safety arrangements.

"The management of those high-rises must enhance the standard of its safety and security," he said.

Association of Shopping Center Managers of Indonesia (APPBI) chairman Andreas Kartawinata said his association would take concerns seriously, promising to train security guards in spotting potential suicides.

"We will tell security guards to stay alert and pay attention to any suspicious behavior of the mall-goers, for instance, those who look confused," Andreas said.

However, he rebuked the idea of installing the Nets. "The Net will only make the malls look like a building under construction. I don't think *the nets* would look good," he said.

On Monday, a 24-year-old woman died after falling from the fifth-floor of Grand Indonesia shopping center in Central Jakarta. A few hours later, a 25-year-old man died after falling from fifth-floor Senayan City.

Meanwhile, spokeswomen from Grand Indonesia and Senayan City said the incidents were "unpredictable" and "unavoidable".

Grand Indonesia spokeswoman Teges P. Soraya said earlier the suicide was something that the mall's management could not prevent, however, security guards had been told to warn visitors of the dangers of leaning against glass railings.
