Photography and art in KL this week

P

hotography enthusiasts will find KL their dream city in the first week of February. And being a modern city with tons of interesting spots to capture, in addition to growing appreciation of art, various photography exhibitions offering different themes are being held.

The start of February also marks the official end to the year 2009, at least for the organizers of the KL Photo Awards. And that's why, as a lead up to the KL Photo Awards 2010, they're holding a special gathering called KL Photo Awards 2009 FLASHBACK! Introducing ABUSIDARTE, a program aimed at "taking the art directly to the people" instead of "waiting for people to see the art".

The event is open to anyone interested in photography, while photographers, finalists and judges who participated in last year's competition, namely Beverly Yong, Majidah Hashim, Lim Chee Wah, and Pang Khee Teik, will come as guests.

The event will take place in The Annexe Gallery, 1st and 2nd floor, Central Market Annexe, Jl. Hang Kasturi, 50470 Kuala Lumpur. Be there at 3 p.m. next Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010.

And while you're there, visit the exhibition at Annexe. Titled Kuala Lumpur Dreaming, the exhibition presents the visions of 30 artists, photographers and sculptors in addition to works by Burmese refugees, indigenous people and children affected by HIV.

If you're wondering what it's all got to do with "dreaming", which is the theme of the exhibition, the city of 1.6 million dreamers has started to take shape according to its individuals. See how each artist's imagination flourishes in their own little space within the city, appreciate their boldness and you will begin to acknowledge others' dreams. Running from Feb. 4 to 21, the exhibition is open to everyone, with or without money.

Another photography exhibition not to miss is the Sony World Photography Global Tour 2009/2010 Exhibition.

Taking place at the Galeri Petronas, the level three of Suria KLCC right below Petronas Tower, the highly anticipated exhibition has since 2007 been considered a platform for amateur and professional photographers to present their latest works across 10 and 12 award categories.

The award-winning images displayed from Feb. 4 to March 28 were selected from over 60,000 images submitted by photographers spread in 139 countries by highly influential personalities from international photographic communities in the Sony World Photography Awards Honorary Judging Committee 2009. This exhibition, once again, is free, but visit www.galeripetronas.com.my for further information.
