Police sea patrol catches clothes smuggler

D

UMAI: The National Police sea patrol team, led by First Insp. Carito S.S.T. intercepted a boat attempting to smuggle secondhand clothes from Malaysia to Indonesia at Rupat Strait in Dumai, Riau province, an official said Monday.

"One-hundred-and-twenty bags of secondhand clothing have been confiscated and will be sent to a nearby police office for investigation," Carito was quoted by Antara as saying.

Carito said his patrol boat, Taka, was doing a routine check from Riau Islands waters to Rupat Strait and Dumai.

The boat spotted a motorboat named Bina Maju, en route from Malaysia to Dumai. The patrol team claimed to have been suspicious so they intercepted the boat and searched it.

"We found 120 bags piled on and below deck. The bags were not accompanied by official import documents," he said.

The boat crew said they had been smuggling secondhand clothing from Malaysia for two months.

The crew violated the customs law. They may be charged with smuggling, which carries a maximum 10-year jail penalty.
