oyal and determined, legislator Tjandra Pratomo Samiadji Massaid — popularly known as Adjie Massaid — leaves behind unforgettable memories for his family and friends.
Adjie, who first came to public attention as an actor, later entered politics and became a “politician with integrity”.
“He gave his best and contributed significantly to advancing both Indonesian sports and arts. His death has shocked all of us,” President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono told Adjie’s family at their residence in Cilandak, South Jakarta, on Saturday.
Yudhoyono said he first became acquainted with Adjie eight years ago. “He had a very determined will to become a politician with integrity and a role model for both his country and the people,” Yudhoyono said, adding that he and First Lady Kristiani Herawati grieved over the death.
Adjie, who died at the age of 43, reportedly suffered a heart attack after playing indoor soccer on
Saturday evening. He was taken to Fatmawati Hospital in South Jakarta but did not survive.
Following his divorce in 2005 from pop singer Reza Artamevia, Adjie married former beauty queen Angelina Sondakh, who is also a legislator, in 2009. They have one child, Keanu Jabar Massaid. Adjie had two daughters, Zahwa and Aaliya Massaid, from his first marriage.
Adjie, a member of the Democratic Party, was elected to the House of Representatives in 2004 and
reelected in 2009.
Many colleagues said Adjie’s death was a big loss for the party.
Democratic Party legislator Ruhut Sitompul said he was shocked when he first heard the news of Adjie’s death.
“He was a close friend,” he added.
Adjie, he said, was a person who did not hesitate to openly extend his friendship to those around him.
Thousands of mourners attended Adjie’s funeral at Jeruk Purut cemetery in South Jakarta on Saturday.
Indonesian U-23 national soccer team players wore black armbands and observed a moment of silence in tribute to Adjie, their team manager, in their match against the Pelita Jaya U-21 side on Saturday evening.
The Indonesian Soccer Association (PSSI) in April last year appointed Adjie to manage the U-23 side. He was selected due to his strong drive to improve the performance of Indonesian soccer, which has been marred by corruption and mismanagement.
PSSI secretary-general Nugraha Besoes had once claimed that Adjie had a good chance of becoming the next PSSI chairman.
Lately, Adjie had been focused on preparing his players for pre-Olympic matches beginning at the end of this month. (ebf)
