Amid reports that graft fugitive M. Nazaruddin was in Singapore to avoid Indonesian authorities, on Tuesday the Singapore government announced that the former Democratic Party treasurer was not in town.

“Nazaruddin is not in Singapore and has not been here for some time,” Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says in a statement obtained by The Jakarta Post.

“This information was conveyed to the Indonesian authorities several weeks ago, long before he was named a suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission [KPK] on June 30, 2011,” it says.

The report adds that Singapore would always be willing to cooperate with Indonesian authorities to arrest Nazaruddin.

Your comments:

In many countries, it is against the law to protect criminals. How about Nazaruddin’s lawyer?

Isn’t he protecting Nazaruddin by refusing to disclose his client’s whereabouts?

Indonesia is a strange country in dealing with criminals.

Ha, ha! What huge surprise — not! Wow, he really recovered his health quickly. Did you really expect him to sit there and wait for Indonesia to come searching for him?

A lot of people he has named are probably happy that he won’t be easy to find.

It sounds like normal Indonesian business as usual to me.

Charge his lawyer! Singapore was aware that Nazaruddin was a fugitive well before June 30. What’s
going on here?
