Police arrest suspect in karaoke rape case

J

akarta Police arrested a man on Tuesday, identified only as Kiki, who allegedly raped a teenage girl in a karaoke lounge at Senayan City shopping mall in Central Jakarta.

Central Jakarta Police detective chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Muhammad Firman said the police handling the case had enough evidence to name Kiki a suspect in the case.

Kiki, who was arrested at his home in Cibubur, East Jakarta, was suspected of raping 19-year-old P after intoxicating her with alcoholic beverages.

“He raped the victim in the toilet,” Firman said.

The suspect was the older brother of P’s boyfriend.

A chronology report from the police said that P, a native of Ciputat, Tangerang, met with Kiki and his friend, Rama, in Pondok Indah Mall, in South Jakarta at around 10 p.m. on Tuesday last week.

The three then went to a karaoke lounge in Senayan City. It was at the karaoke bar that the three met Rio and Prass, two witnesses in the case.

Once inside the karaoke lounge, there were four other men who had reportedly been expecting them.

P, who recently graduated from high school, initially refused the alcoholic beverages Kiki offered her.

She finally relented and drank the beverages after Kiki allegedly reassured her by telling her that, as the older brother of her boyfriend, he would protect her.

Once P was intoxicated, Kiki reportedly took her to the karaoke’s toilet and raped her.

Soon after the alleged rape, Kiki reportedly took pictures of P’s naked body and uploaded them via BlackBerry messenger and auctioned off the photos.

After being sent home, P told her parents that she had been robbed on her way home.

P’s family began to notice something was wrong after P withdrew from her family and locked herself in her room.

P’s family persuaded her to tell them what was wrong and she told them her account of the events at the karaoke. Her family filed a report with the Central Jakarta Police on Sunday.

Police charged Kiki with Article 286 of the Criminal Code on rape and for distributing the pictures.

Kiki could face up to nine years in prison for the first crime.

Firman said that although there were eight other people in the room, so far the police had only named Kiki as a suspect in the case.

“[Kiki] admitted to the investigators what he did,” Firman said.

The chairman of the NGO the National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA), Ariest Merdeka Sirait, has called for the karaoke management to disclose its policy on serving alcoholic beverages to minors.

“The management should explain how these kids [who were involved in the case] got their hands on liquor,” Ariest said as quoted by detik.com.

Ariest also said that the suspect in the case had also become a victim of the pornography-obsessed society.

“This is very risky. The suspect is a victim of society and he could be charged both with the Criminal Code and the anti-pornography law,” he said.

The incident is similar to what happened to the lead singer of teen pop band Vierra, Widy Soediro Nichlany.
