AKARTA: The government has issued a policy to stop sending Indonesian workers to Syria as of Tuesday.

Manpower and Transmigration Minister Muhaimin Iskandar said the decision was made in line with the government’s commitment to protecting Indonesian citizens who work, or intend to work abroad.

Muhaimin said the government had evaluated the placement and protection system of domestic workers in Syria and found the system flawed.

“The cases on Indonesian domestic workers in Syria are increasing,” he said. “As of today, both countries have yet to sign any agreement on placement and protection of the workers.”

The ministry data shows that from January to July this year there were 3,726 Indonesian workers in Syria. Of that number, 284 work in formal sector jobs, while 3,442 work in the informal sector.
