occer’s world governing body FIFA director for development and association, Thierry Regenass, visited the Indonesian Soccer Association (PSSI) office in Jakarta on Tuesday in order to discuss soccer development in the country.

The top FIFA official was accompanied by Asia’s development director Domeca Iribaldi and Asian Football Confederation’s secretary-general Alex Sossay and legal director James Thomson during the meeting.

Regenass said that his visit to Jakarta was also intended for meeting newly elected PSSI officials. During the discussion, PSSI presented its plan for a new competition format for the upcoming Indonesian league season, he added.

PSSI reportedly had decided to alter its competition format into a two-conference form from the current one-conference arrangement for at least the next three seasons, saying that the new format would be far more affordable for clubs partaking in the league given the huge size of Indonesia.

When asked about the possible new format, Regenass said that FIFA would let PSSI make the final decision on whether Indonesia would continue to use the current one-conference format or apply the new arrangement.

In terms of former rival Indonesian Premier League (LPI), Regenass said that PSSI had done a great job in settling the matter by merging LPI with FIFA and recognizing the Indonesian Soccer League.

Regenass also delivered options that FIFA had offered regarding development of soccer in Indonesia.

Regenass, who observed PSSI’s May congress in Jakarta, which ended in disarray, said both parties talked extensively about the future of Indonesian soccer, adding that FIFA was happy to continue its cooperation with the association.

FIFA and AFC delegations were scheduled to watch the third round of World Cup Qualifiers in Asia between Indonesia and Bahrain at Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Senayan sports complex, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday evening.

PSSI chairman Johar Arifin Husin said last month that the association had determined to apply a possible two, or more additional conference, format to answer problems clubs might face in joining the league.

Amid the current one-conference format, many clubs complained about transportation costs, he said.

“[We chose the two-conference format] because Indonesia is so vast that a team must use air transportation to partake in an away match. The AFC had approved our plan,” Johar said as quoted by kompas.com.
