JAKARTA: Dangdut singer Ridho Rhoma says there was nothing unusual in the recent case of a local ulema council banning certain dangdut singers from performing due to perceived vulgarity
AKARTA: Dangdut singer Ridho Rhoma says there was nothing unusual in the recent case of a local ulema council banning certain dangdut singers from performing due to perceived vulgarity.
“Even I have been banned before. Besides, everyone has their own opinions,” he said Monday as quoted by kompas.com.
In December of last year, a local MUI branch’s ban triggered the East Java Police to cancel the concert “Nada dan Dakwah” (Notes and proselytization) starring Ridho and the Sonet 2 Band in Pamekasan, Madura.
According to the local MUI, the concert was seen as inharmonious with religion and had the potential to induce wrongdoing.
Ridho, whose father is dangdut singer Rhoma Irama, said the bans should encourage dangdut singers to be more creative in producing their own styles and to turn their dance movements into an art form and not just erotic display.
