undreds of students at the University of Lampung (Unila) held a vigil on Tuesday evening, demanding justice for Pratama Wijaya Kusuma, a student from the Faculty of Economics and Business who died after allegedly being abused during a mountaineering club's initiation training.

Dressed in black, students lit candles and scattered flower petals around the university’s traffic circle at 8 p.m. as a sign of mourning.

One of the participants, Atika Fadia, said hazing and all forms of abuse on campus must no longer be tolerated.

“What Pratama endured was an injustice. We’re here to demand an end to all forms of violence and abuse on campus,” she said as reported by Kompas.

Pratama’s mother, Wirna Wani, said her son was one of six students who joined an initiation training held by the Economics Students’ Mountaineering Club (Mahepel) on the slopes of Mount Betung in Pesawaran Regency, Lampung on Nov. 14-17 last year.

“I picked my son up from campus on November 18. When we arrived home, he collapsed,” Wirna said on Tuesday. “His body was covered in bruises, and one of his toenails had been torn off.”
