AKARTA: A paralysed woman was burned alive while trying to escape a fire that razed a housing complex on Jl. Bambu Ori, Pondok Bambu, East Jakarta, at the break of dawn on Friday.

The victim, Linda Astuti, 36, might have been trying to save herself when she died, according to a Jakarta Police statement.

Her body was found severely burned near the front door of her house.

The police said that Linda was sick and was alone at her home and that this could have been the reason for her failure to escape.

The police also said that the fire might have been started by a gas canister explosion at a house in the complex.

The fire also completely destroyed five houses, and it took five fire engines to extinguish the blaze.
