AYAPURA: Newcomers have been barred from trading in Lanny Jaya regency, Papua, as the local government is seeking to offer more opportunities to indigenous people to financially empower themselves, according to the regent.
Regent Befa Jigibalom announced the policy on Friday on the sidelines of a socialization campaign by the central government to promote the Unit for the Acceleration of Development in Papua and West Papua (UP4B) in Jayapura.
“We decided to issue the policy after undertaking a thorough discussion process. This aims to give opportunities to indigenous Papuans in Lanny Jaya to become economic players. Our brothers from outside have dominated the local economy so far,” he said.
The trading activities mentioned include opening kiosks and restaurants.
He said his administration had allocated funds as incentives to indigenous Papuans who took up trading activities.
The UP4B was recently established by the President to accelerate development in Papua and West Papua.
