our comments on the deadly incident in which a motorist lost control of a vehicle on Sunday and plowed into a group of pedestrians in Jakarta, claiming the lives of nine people and injuring five others:
First, I would like to convey my great condolences to the families who became victims of allegedly reckless driving. Allegedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol she robbed them of their beloved family members.
In my opinion, to prevent such incidents authorities should conduct safe-driving campaigns regularly because of the growing number of new street users. The campaigns should focus on raising drivers’ awareness their health and their vehicles’ condition. If necessary, placing a damaged vehicle in a strategic area can convey a strong message for drivers to be careful.
I’d also suggest that, each time a driver renews their license, the police evaluate the abilities of each driver.
If there are doubts over their driving abilities, the applicant should have to perform additional tests before a driving license is issued.
Finally, the authorities should prevent the irresponsible misuse of sidewalks. We often see street vendors occupy half, or even a whole, pedestrian lane. As a result, pedestrians are taking risks walking in the fast lanes of vehicle. Giving pedestrians a feeling of security is a fulfillment of human rights.

The motorist should be strongly punished because she has allegedly killed many people. Six years in prison is not enough.

We cannot look at the accident as an isolated occurrence. The question should go as far as to why such kinds of accidents can take place in Jakarta. This has something to do with our culture of driving and traffic that seems to allow these accidents to happen at any time and in any place.

For the sake of justice for the dead victims, the driver of the Xenia should be sentenced to death. I think capital punishment will meet the demands of the victims’ families. This fatal accident is expected to awaken the police.
We must remember that many people were destroyed because the authorities did not do their best to enforce the law. Human beings have been granted with some potentials to manage the world.
I feel deep sympathy for the families of those killed as well as the injured.

This motorist must have a speedy trial that’s given wide publicity. She must be made to compensate every alleged victim of her negligence and not be allowed to buy herself out of this. Otherwise, people will take the law into their hands and lynch any driver involved in an accident, guilty or not.

In Indonesia, you can’t view pornography but you can drive while drunk and under the influence of drugs. You can allegedly drive without having driving license and kill nine persons on the street and only face six years in jail.
