AKARTA: The Jakarta administration has launched a river waste management program combined with a water reserving campaign in a military complex in Cijantung, East Jakarta.
The center is designed to manage waste dumped in a stretch of the Ciliwung River between Manggarai and Depok.
Rusman Sagala, head for environment management at the Jakarta Environmental management Agency (BPLHD), said that waste management would also involve local residents.
“They can sell plastic materials and bottles and other valuable waste to junk dealers and recyclers,” Rusman said as quoted by tempo.co.
BPLHD data shows that 71 percent of the city’s rivers are heavily polluted. Most of the pollution in Jakarta’s rivers comes from industrial and domestic sources.
