ANDA ACEH: Thousands of regent candidate supporters burned down the office of the Independent Election Commission (KIP) and five district offices in Gayo Lues, Aceh, to protest the result of the regent election, on Friday.

The protests broke out after polling day on April 9 when incumbent candidate Ibnu Hasim-Adam collected the most votes.

The protesters asked the KIP to hold another election for Gayo Lues, arguing that the Ibnu Hasim- Adam campaigning team had used intimidation tactics en route to victory.

To prevent the situation from worsening, hundreds of police officers were deployed to Blangkejeren, the central town of Gayo Lues.

The poll and other polls in several other regions were held simultaneously with the gubernatorial election featuring five pairs.
