ATAM: Indonesian and Malaysian authorities have agreed to avoid the physical persecution of illegal fishermen who are found trespassing in disputed sea territories.

The issue was raised during a bilateral meeting in Batam on Friday.

The two neighboring countries are still at odds over sea territories and accusations of illegal fishing. The five overlapping areas, which have been claimed by both sides, are located in the southern and northern part of Malaka Strait, the South China Sea, the Sulawesi Sea and Singaporean waters.

“There should be no more hostilities against fishermen,” navy officer Colonel Edi Fernandi, the spokesperson of the Coordinating Agency for Sea Security (Bakorkamla) said on Friday.

“We have agreed on almost every point in the draft. Only one issue is left pending as we need to discuss it further in Malaysia in October,” Edi said.
