(JP/Niken Prathivi)For David Kurnia Albert Dorfel, keyboardist in Indonesia’s top band Noah, being busy is a natural state of being. Noah is in the middle of a tight tour schedule following the release of the band’s latest album, Seperti Seharusnya (As It is Supposed to be), released last year. Starting in March, David, who co-wrote Noah’s first hit “Separuh Aku” (Half of Me), says that he is ready for Noah’s full swing.
“I’ve been focusing on my recovery [from an undisclosed illness], so I couldn’t join some of the band’s gigs in the country. Despite the recovery, I haven’t had much free time but I still keep busy by doing my part in creating songs for Noah’s next album.
But in general, I live an organized life – for example, if I used to make music until dawn, now I stop at 10 p.m., and go to bed. Being in recovery means that I can’t do as many gigs tours as I have done in the past, but it also means that I can do other things as well. If my band mates cannot focus on songwriting for Noah’s next album because of the hectic tour, I’m available, and I also write for other artists.
One of the artists is [pop singer] Afgan. I wrote the song, “Untukmu Aku Bertahan” [For You I Survive] for him. I am the type of person who focuses on one thing at a time. Right now, I’m all about Noah, it’s my priority. However, if I get the time and energy to make songs for other artists, I’m open to opportunities. All Noah’s members are OK about it.
Now that I am recovering, I will be ready to return to Noah by early March. While I’m on tour, I usually find time to rest. Even when I was on a tour [months ago], and I was beginning to feel unwell, my management would always give me more time to rest by canceling some of my meet and greet appearances.
The favorite way to spend my free times is actually just by staying at my comfortable home.
My ultimate hobby is being in a state of not doing anything. I usually turn off all of my electronic devices and sit still and be silent.
I also read. I have found that reading has influenced my point of view, especially my lyrics. I also like movies. Interesting scenes from movies also inspire me to create songs. My all time favorite film is an old one, Lolita a great movie with all its puzzles.”
