he National Police Commission (Kompolnas) has deplored the measures taken by the National Police (Polri) which has detained a low-ranking police officer Adj.First Insp. (Aiptu) Labora Sitorus with fat bank accounts. It is also considered by the commission that Polri has exaggerated the number of transactions Labora has made.
'There has been a public falsehood here. There is data, concerning the amount of Aiptu Labora Sitorus's wealth, that is untrue,' said Kompolnas' commissioner M.Nasser on Sunday as quoted by Kompas.com.
Labora was detained for holding a suspicious bank account containing more than Rp 1 trillion (US$102 million) allegedly linked to illegal logging and fuel smuggling. The arrest took place soon after he reported to the commission at its office in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Saturday.
Naser accused the police of steering public opinion by benefiting from information released by the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK), which detailed an accumulation of financial transactions Labora had made since 2007.
He said the commission considered that it was reasonable that the total amount of financial transactions made by Labora during a five year period from 2007 to 2012 reached Rp 1.5 trillion because he was not only a police officer but also a businessman.
'The information has been twisted. The accumulation of financial transactions is comprised of revenues, payments, and credit balance. As it is an accumulation, then it is reasonable that there is Rp 1.5 trillion worth of transactions during five years in which the amount of transactions reached Rp 300 billion annually or Rp 25 billion per month,' said Naser.
'For a person who runs a business like him, it does make sense. It seems that the public has been misled with false information,' he added. (asw/ebf)
