ave the Children says it is ready to respond a strong earthquake near Bener Meriah, Aceh, northern Sumatra, on Tuesday, which caused landslides and widespread damage.

Save the Children Indonesia director Ricardo Caivano said more fatalities were expected after the 6.2 magnitude earthquake, which was at a depth of 10 kilometers, rocked the area.

'€œWe are expecting many more landslides due to aftershocks and thunderstorms [...] Many houses have collapsed with many more at risk because of aftershocks,'€ said Caivano in a statement made available to The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

As of Wednesday, at least 22 people have been killed with more than 200 others injured, The Associated Press reported.

The children'€™s aid agency'€™s field office team in Bener Meriah is assessing the situation and will launch a response with local partners if necessary.

'€œWe are especially worried about children who have been separated from their parents while they were at work. Earthquakes are also a terrifying experience, especially for young children,'€ said Caivano, adding that the children would likely need food, water, medical supplies, blankets and a roof over their heads.

'€œIn the coming days, they will also need a safe space to play and talk about their experiences,'€ he added. (ebf)
