alaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has praised the leaders of both Thailand and Cambodia for agreeing to a ceasefire in their peace talks, calling it a reaffirmation of ASEAN’s “convening power” and a testament to the bloc’s ability to resolve conflict through dialogue, mutual trust and regional cooperation.
As the leader of Malaysia, which holds ASEAN’s rotating chairmanship this year, Anwar helped broker what he described as an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” between the Southeast Asian neighbors.
The truce that took effect at midnight on Monday followed days of deadly border clashes that erupted on July 24 and killed at least 38 people, mostly civilians, as well as displaced hundreds of thousands.
In a policy speech delivered on Tuesday at the regional grouping’s Jakarta headquarters, Anwar said the border tensions had become “a cause for grave concern” and stressed that swift ASEAN intervention was needed to prevent further escalation.
“I believed that, despite the dangerous and escalating situation, it was both vital and possible to bring the two sides to the negotiating table,” said the Malaysian premier.

Anwar also commended Thailand’s acting prime minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet for their “statesmanship" and their willingness to cooperate, which he said proved that “peace is best achieved through dialogue, mutual respect and a shared commitment to stability”.
