Five men arrested in connection to Myanmar bomb plot

T

he National Police's Densus 88 counterterrorism squad confirmed on Wednesday the arrest of five men in connection to the foiled plot to bomb the Myanmar Embassy in Jakarta.

National Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Agus Rianto said Densus 88 personnel, in cooperation with the Jakarta Police, detained the suspects in two separate raids in Tangerang, Banten, and Cipayung, East Jakarta.

"Last Sunday at around 4:30 p.m. we detained MZ for his alleged involvement in the bomb plot. According to our data, he handed a bomb to Rohadi," Agus said in South Jakarta.

In May, the police had arrested Rohadi and his three accomplices - Sigit Indrajit, Sefa Riano and Achmad Taufiq - and confiscated five homemade bombs from them.

They were accused of planning to set off a bomb in the Myanmar Embassy in retaliation for the persecution of the Rohingya Muslims in the country.

Agus said that they had arrested four men, identified only as EK, IK, M and R, in Cipayung, East Jakarta, on Tuesday evening.

"IK is a recidivist terrorist. He previously served eight years in prison and was released in 2008," he said.

The other three men were taken into custody because they were with IK during the raid.

IK is Iqbal Khusaeni, who was once jailed for planning the murder of Liberal Islam Network activist Ulil Abshar Abdalla and a pastor.
