he Food and Drugs Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has found 59 types of chemically-tainted traditional herbal medicines, of which 57 were unregistered, in markets in several regions across Indonesia from October 2012 until October 2013.
'Most of the chemicals found in the traditional medicines were paracetamol and phenylbutazone, which are normally used in painkillers and anti-rheumatic prescription drugs, respectively, as well as sildenafil, which is commonly used to cure erectile dysfunction,' the BPOM said in a statement made available to The Jakarta Post on Friday.
Following the findings, the BPOM has issued a public warning to remind people to not consume the tainted medicine as they pose serious health risks.
'As a follow up, we have taken the products from the markets and destroyed them,' the agency said.
It added that the BPOM had also revoked the licenses of registered traditional medicine it later found to have contained chemical substances and brought the perpetrators involved in the crimes to justice.
During the last two years, 44 cases have been brought to justice with the highest sentence of two years in prison and a Rp 22.5 million (US$ 1,980) fine. (ebf)
