everal NGOs have launched websites providing voters with a list of candidates that detail their backgrounds to help them decide what candidate to vote for in the 2014 legislative election.
Transparency International Indonesia (TII) said its website ' checkyourcandidates.org ' contained legislative candidates that were less than 40 years old to introduce the public to new political faces.
TII program coordinator Wawan Suyatmiko said on Monday that at least 50 percent of young voters in Indonesia believed that the upcoming election would not make any significant change to the country. Such pessimism, he said, was one of reasons TII launched the website.
The website provides information on at least 410 young legislative candidates, including celebrities such as Primus Yustisio and Desy Ratnasari.
Wawan said only legislative candidates from Jakarta Greater Area and parts of Java were listed in the website due to technical problems.
Other election monitoring websites recently launched include politikuang.net; pantaupemilu.or.id; matamassa.org; and @jariungu on Twitter.
Earlier, a group of NGOs launched a bersih2014.net, to inform voters of legislative candidates they may choose in the election.
Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) coordinator, Haris Azhar, said legislative candidates included on the website were considered to have a strong commitment to eradicating corruption, human rights promotion and environmental issues.
"They are willing to work for the people and have been tested in solving problems,' he said as quoted by tempo.co.
The website lists around 60 candidates including Prita Mulyasari, a housewife who was jailed for alleged libel after an e-mail she wrote containing complaints about Omni International Hospital's treatment went viral in 2008. (idb/ebf)
