JIS ordered to close kindergarten

T

he Education and Culture Ministry through its non-formal and informal early childhood education (PAUDNI) directorate general has sent an official letter to the Jakarta International School (JIS), ordering the closure of the school'€™s kindergarten.

'€œWe have decided that JIS'€™ kindergarten program must be closed. JIS has been proven to have no permit for running the program,'€ PAUDNI director-general Lydia Freyani Hawadi said on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.

Lydia said the closure was decided in a meeting attended by Education and Culture Minister Mohammad Nuh. The director-general said she had signed the closure letter based on recommendations from the minister.

'€œAs PAUDNI director-general, I have signed the closure letter based on the minister'€™s recommendations because a license issuance is based on my permission,'€ Lydia said.

She said the kindergarten would be closed at the end of the academic year.

'€œWe have formed an investigation team to carry out education and forensic audits of JIS. If the team finds that it'€™s proper for the kindergarten to operate again, then we will permit the school to open,'€ Lydia said.

She added that kindergarten students from the academic year of 2013-2014 were still allowed to go to school until the academic year ended.

'€œBut the kindergarten is prohibited from receiving new students in the next academic year,'€ said Lydia. (idb/ebf)
