he Batam Tourism Agency has revealed that the Day of Sacrifice (Idul Adha) and its sacrificing of livestock proved to be an interesting touristattraction for Singaporean Muslims.
Batam Tourism Agency head Yusfa Hendri said four groups of Singaporean Muslims, totaling 100 people, had given six bulls and 60 goats to the management of the Batam Grand Mosque. After being slaughtered, the meat was distributed to local residents, especially needy ones.
'The Idul Adha Day of Sacrifice has been marketed by some tour and travel agencies as a religious tourism packages. We have seen the number of Singaporean Muslims visiting Batam continuing to increase each year,' he said.
Deputy director of the Batam Grand Mosque's management, Syarifuddin, confirmed that the mosque had been cooperating with a travel agency to help the Singaporean tourists to make their livestock donations for Idul Adha.
'There was no special treatment here. We just helped them to donate their livestock to be distributed here,' he said.
According to the Batam Tourism Agency, Singaporean tourists tops the list for foreign tourists visiting the city. From January to July this year, 465,427 Singaporeans visited Batam, surpassing last year's figure of 403,314.(dic)
