oreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi has asked the Brunei government to open consular access to an Indonesian who has been detained in Brunei for six days for bringing explosives into the country.
The ministry's director for the protection of Indonesian citizens, Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, said on Friday that Rustawi Tomo Kabul had been detained in Brunei for six days without legal aid from the Indonesian Embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan.
"Minister Retno has contacted [her Brunei counterpart Lim Jock Seng] asking Brunei to open consular access for the embassy to give legal aid [to Rustawi]," he said as quoted by kompas.com.
Brunei authorities arrested Rustawi and two other Indonesians for carrying explosives in their luggage while on transit via Royal Brunei Airlines to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to perform umrah, the minor pilgrimages.
The other two Indonesians have been released, while Rustawi will be tried starting on May 11.
Iqbal said the Brunei government had promised not only to open access for the Indonesian embassy, but also for Rustawi's family.
If found guilty, Rustawi would face five to 15 years in prison. The embassy would make sure that Rustawi would get legal assistance during the process, Iqbal said.
