esearch and Technology and Higher Education Minister Muhammad Nasir and West Java Governor Ahmad 'Aher' Heryawan signed on Tuesday a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the application of agribusiness technology in the province.
The cooperation will be implemented first in the genetic modification of cattle by artificial insemination, germ-plasm conservation and genetic modification.
'We will conduct genetic modification on the cattle to meet the increasing demand for beef,' said Aher at a press conference on Tuesday.
West Java is known as one of the main producers of beef in Indonesia.
The province is expected to help meet the national demand for 640,000 tons of beef in 2015.
The minister said that the cattle breeding would be conducted on 450 hectares of farmland in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, due to limited space in Jakarta. (fsu)(+++)
