resident Prabowo Subianto attended the Bastille Day parade, the commemoration of the storming of the Bastille in Paris in 1789, on Monday, accepting the invitation from his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, as the two leaders increase security cooperation.
Leading an Indonesian delegation consisting of ministers and military personnel, Prabowo sat next to Macron during the celebration, overseeing an hours-long military parade featuring French and Indonesian troops marching along the Champs-Elysees.
The parade began early morning on Monday, with 7,000 soldiers marching and riding on horseback or in armored vehicles. Ranks of military personnel took turns showing off their might and discipline, accompanied by the sounds of marching bands and aircraft passing overhead in a display of French military prowess.
As Prabowo watched as this year’s parade’s guest of honor, the Indonesian Military’s (TNI) Patriot II Task Force, consisting of military personnel and a joint cadet drum band, led off the parade along with traditional performances on the sidelines.
Joining the task force were 262 ceremonial troops from the TNI’s three services and 189 cadets from the TNI Academy. Cadets from the Police Academy also joined the drum band.
Dressed in a dark gray suit, red tie, a black songkok (traditional hat) and a pair of sunglasses, Prabowo was seen chatting with Macron in the front row during the event. His son Didit Hediprasetyo was seated behind the two leaders.
