resident Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo on Tuesday named Kupang as a 2015 Child Friendly City, the award forming part of the government's commitment to safeguarding and protecting children and women in the provincial capital of East Nusa Tenggara.
'Today, President Jokowi is scheduled to express his appreciation to all leaders of cities granted 2015 Child Friendly City awards,' Kupang Mayor Jonas Salean said as quoted by Antara on Tuesday.
The President will be presenting the awards at the 2015 National Child Day celebration to be held at the Bogor Palace on Tuesday.
Jonas said Kupang had received the award twice since he became the mayor of the city in 2012. 'It is the second time Kupang has received the award as it first received it in 2012,' he said.
Jonas added that the Child Friendly City award Kupang had received was the result of relentless efforts and hard work by all sections of government and society in the city. He said the effort included the creation of several children's organizations and the government's initiative to make all of Kupang's 51 sub-districts child-friendly.
'We have also established child-friendly schools and community health centers. Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Yohana Yambise has visited the child-friendly facilities recently,' said Jonas.
Kupang Legislative Council (DPRD) speaker Yeskiel Loudoe said separately that
the council congratulated the Kupang administration for winning the Child Friendly City award for the second time.
He said the DPRD Kupang would continue to support the government's creation of popular programs and policies for children and women, including obtaining adequate budget allocations for the programs. (ebf)(+++)
