Guess what?: Giring celebrates his name

A

victim of bullying during childhood, Nidji'€™s vocalist Giring recently took part in a campaign that aims to stop name-calling and verbal bullying.

'€œLet'€™s start by calling people by their real name,'€ he said as reported by tribunnews.com on Thursday.

His full name, Giring Ganesha, wasn'€™t common during his youth and often put him on the receiving end of jokes. '€œMy father later explained the meaning of my name, which was taken from one of the first Islamic preachers in Java and a Sanskrit word that means wisdom and knowledge. After I understood the true meaning of my name, I no longer cared about the names people called me'€.

The '€œThat'€™s Not My Name'€ campaign was launched on Wednesday, sponsored by Coca Cola and the anti-bullying community Sudah Dong. Using the tagline '€œcelebrate your name'€, the campaign involves many celebrities.

Actress Tatjana Saphira admits that she is often offended by the way people pronounce her name. '€œTatjana means fairy in Croatian. I think we should start showing respect to others by not overlooking small things such as the correct pronunciation of another person'€™s name'€.
